Gobichettipalayam was early called as Verapandi Gramam. It was christened on June 1, 1949. It was named after a rich man Gobana Chettiar who lived there. It is a semi-rural place which is located in Erode district. Gobichettipalayam is one of the places where the women electorate is more than the men. The agricultural products cultivated here are Rice, Sugarcane, turmeric and banana. Now the spinning mills and textile industries are also developing.

    Gobichettipalayam can also be called as Gopi. The name Gobichettipalayam has came from a person’s name called as Gopi Chetty an old man who lived there. The people in Gobichettipalayam are engaged in Weaving and Agriculture. It is famous for the Dam Kodavari and Pariyur Amman temple. In this city one of the important temples is “Kondathu Kaliamman Temple. The diety in this temple is Goddess Kaliamman who presents the blessings to her devotees. This is located in Pariyur, which is 4 kms away from Gopi. The people who want to decide important things in life will come here and pray and take any one of the two different colours of flowers, which is believed as God’s result. They believe that the decision of God is good for their well being of life. The whole temple is built in marbles. The statues of Brammahi Vaishnavi, Maheshwari, Gowmari, and Chamundi are seen inside the temple. There is one story about this temple. In olden days people here were suffering from one evil disease and many people died of this. The remaining people asked goddess to cure this disease. Goddess also cured and satisfied the needs of the people. So this goddess was named as Kaliamman.
